David R. Myers

October 2, 1943 ~ November 17, 2016 (age 73) 73 Years Old

David Ruby Myers, 73, who taught physics in the Prince George’s County school system for 39 years, died of cancer on Nov. 17, 2016.

David was born Oct. 2, 1943 in Easton, son of Merl D. and Lillie R. Myers. His family moved to Laurel in 1949, where he lived most of the rest of his life.

He graduated from Laurel Junior-Senior High School in 1961. He then earned his undergraduate degree from The Johns Hopkins University in 1965 and began 11 years as a physics and chemistry teacher at Crossland High School in Temple Hills. In 1967 he married Sherry Swank, whom he had met while she was a nursing student at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore.

In 1976 David joined the initial faculty of newly opened Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt. During the next 28 years he served as science department chair, was recognized as the county’s Outstanding Science Teacher in 1987 and was a finalist in the state of Maryland for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science. He traveled to Rwanda in 2002 for a University of Maryland program to instruct educators there in science teaching. David also taught a summer course for elementary science teachers for two decades at Prince George’s Community College.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Laurel, where he sang with the choir, led Sunday school classes and was chairman of the Administrative Board. He was a founding member of Side by Side, a nonprofit organization supporting Prince George’s County schools, and served as its board president and treasurer.

He is survived by his wife Sherry, daughter and son-in-law Trysta and Lenny Yox of Millerstown, Pa.; granddaughter Alexis Duffy and her husband, Bill, of Hanover, Pa.; and siblings Donald T. Myers of Edgewater, Md.; Charles I. Myers and his wife, Marlin, of Oak Island, N.C.; Carey R. Myers and his wife, Trudie, of Dayton, Md.; and Rebecca J. Henderson and her husband, Craig, of Faulkner, Md.; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Dec. 10 at 11:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. Memorial gifts may be made to the church or to Side by Side. Both are at 424 Main Street, Laurel, MD 20707.
