Doris Slocum Anderson

Doris was born in Quincy, Massachusetts on February 21, 1927.  She was the youngest of three girls born to Reverend Gustav Setterstrom and his wife Anna.  Her parents were born in Sweden and immigrated to America as young adults.  When Doris was 5 years old, her father accepted a call to pastor Methodist churches in North Dakota.  The family lived in Harvey, ND until Doris was 14, then they moved to Park River, ND where her father pastored a church that combined both Methodists and Presbyterians.    
Doris attended the University of North Dakota for two years before transferring to Hamlin University in St Paul, MN. She pledged Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and majored in English and Theater.  While at Hamline, Doris met the love of her life, Richard “Dick” Slocum.  After college, she taught 9th grade English for one year while Dick got his Masters degree.  They married in 1949 and moved to Washington DC where Dick had accepted a federal internship.  
They helped start a fledgling Methodist church in Hyattsville, MD, called Ager Road Methodist church.  Doris was extremely active in the United Methodist Women and was an active member of the choir.  She was a frequent soloist at Ager Road.    
Doris also helped lead a senior high Girl Scout troop for many years, staying close to many of the girls afterwards.  Doris and Doris and Dick initially lived in Adelphi MD with their two children, Kathryn and Kevin.  They moved to the Hillandale area of Silver Spring MD in 1960.  They lived there until
Dick passed away in 1982. Doris then moved to Leisure World.  
In 1986, Doris remarried Darwin Anderson. 
Dar was an old friend from Ager Road. She and Dar travelled extensively in his motor home and lived part of year in Sarasota, FL where they became regular attendees at St Johns United Methodist church.  Doris became very active in women’s groups and the choir.  After Darwin’s death in 1994 Doris lived permanently in Sarasota.  In 2010 she relocated back to Maryland where she took up residence at Vantage House, a senior living facility.   
Doris leaves behind her daughter, Kathryn and son-in-law Brian, her son Kevin and daughter-in-law Michele, her nephew Richard, who she helped raise, and his wife Judy. She also leaves 5 grandchildren, Mark, 
Michael (and his wife, Ann), Jessica, Richard, and Daniel.  She also leaves 3 great grandchildren, Olivia, Jack, and Patrick
