George Washington Somerville

George Washington Somerville passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Country Gardens Assisted Living in Highland, MD.  George was born in and raised in the High Ridge area of Laurel on February 27, 1930 to the late William Somerville and the late Laura Gidding.

George was employed at Contee Sand & Gravel for over 60 years.  He started out working driving a concrete mixing truck and eventually transitioned into doing carpentry and maintenance work.  George never “retired” from his employer and still “went to work” a couple of days a week.

George and his wife bought a piece of property in 1955.  He built a house on their property and moved the family from High Ridge to Clarksville in 1955.  George could be found working his property after his day at Contee Sand & Gravel most days.  George always had a garden and raised and sold piglets. 

George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joyce Somerville, two children Elaine Mitchell and George David Somverville.  George also has one sister, Mary Ostmann.  He is also survived by 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
