Joseph P. Slebodnik

Joseph Paul Slebodnik, “Pop,” 95, recently of Ellicott City, Maryland, passed away on January 10, 2018.

He was born December 5, 1922 in Lilly, Pennsylvania to John and Mary Slebodnik.

He was a military veteran who proudly served his country in the Army during World War II from January 1943 to October 1945.  During his time of service, he was awarded the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and six battle stars for his service in Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Rome-Arno, Rhineland, Northern Apennines and Central Europe.

He enjoyed, above all else, spending time on the golf course, reading golf magazines, watching golf on TV, practicing his golf swing in his house (where permanent swing marks showed on the ceiling), camping trips to Eagles Nest near Ocean City (where some ultra-competitive whiffle ball games occurred), fishing and sneaking up to the boardwalk to get a slice of pizza when no one was looking.  His favorite saying was “how ‘bout that.” 

He is survived by a large family who loved him dearly.  He will be sadly missed by his children Karen (Chuck), Mark (Gail), Wendy (Al), Joe (Sue); Beth (John), Kim (Jimmy) and Donald (Rebecca); his grandchildren Joe (Monica), Chris (Heather), Jenny (Mike), Tyler (Lauren), “Little” John, Shannon, Samantha and Caroline; and his great grandchildren Aubrey and Reece.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Slebodnik, his beloved wife, Patricia “Hoomer” Slebodnik, his brother John and his wife Cora “Toot” Slebodnick and his sister Anne “Bert” and her husband Bill McDonald.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. 313 Talbott Avenue Laurel, Maryland 20707 on Wednesday, January 17th from 5 to 8 p.m.  A Catholic Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Mills, 106 St. Mary’s Place, Laurel, MD on Thursday, January 18th at 10:30 a.m.  Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
