Mary E Butler

Mary Elaine Butler, 88, of Columbia, MD passed away April 19, 2017.  She was a resident of Vantage House for 3 years and lived in Florida and Beltsville, MD.

She was born in 1928 to Harry J. Renn and Janet C. Grauel in Spencerville, now Burtonsville.    

She is survived by four of her children--Joseph Butler and wife Freda, Janet Moskavich and husband Tom, Theresa Butler and husband John Vantucci, and Michael Butler and wife Linda; her grandchildren--Michael and Michelle Butler, Candace Butler, Stephanie Norris, Andrew and Casey Vantucci, and Lori Becker; her great grandchildren -- Isabel Butler and Savannah Norris.

She was preceded in death by her husband-Paul, son-James, and brothers Elwood and Albert Renn.

She attended Sherwood Elementary and High School and played soccer, basketball and softball.   Upon graduation from high school, she went to work at Navel Ordinace Lab (NOL) in Silver Spring as a secretary.  She met her husband, Paul Butler, there.  She was his boss’ secretary and they dated for about 3 years before they married on July 3, 1955 at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Washington DC.  They lived in DC until after Joseph was born and moved to Beltsville, MD.  She volunteered at St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Beltsville and was a Girl Scout Leader and Service Unit Chair.  She enjoyed playing cards and Mahjong. 

Upon Paul’s retirement, they moved to St. Augustine, Fl.  She sewed and crocheted, making chemo hats for those with cancer and was an active member in the American Sewing Guild.  She was also enjoyed doing cross word puzzles.  After Paul’s death in 2003, she continued to live in FL until 2014 when she moved into Vantage House in Columbia, MD. 

A memorial service will be on April 29, 2017 at 10 am at St. Francis of Assisi Fulton, 8300 Old Columbia Rd, Fulton, MD  20759 with a reception following the mass.
