On September 5, 2017, Reverend Mr. Francis Leo Hannagan, 89, a Permanent Deacon at St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Laurel, Maryland passed peacefully at home in his sleep. “Deacon Frank” is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Jean (Mertz) Hannagan, his loving daughter Valerie J. Oliver-Palmen (Corey), his devoted son Allen T. Hannagan (Denise), his ten grandchildren: Donald F. Oliver, Michael A. Oliver, Jessica N. Palmen, Nicholas G. Oliver (Faith), Courtney E. Palmen, Michelle V. Oliver, Cody J. Palmen, Jesse T. Oliver, Calvin U. Hannagan, Darcy J. Hannagan and his great grandson Liam S. Oliver, as well as his sister Mary Jo (Hannagan) Mento and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
Rev. Mr. Hannagan moved from his birthplace in Wilmington, Delaware, to Washington, D.C. in 1950, where he worked to earn money to pay for his final year at LaSalle College in Philadelphia. Upon graduation, he returned to Washington where he was hired by the Department of Defense and met his wife Jean on a blind date. He spent his entire professional career at the Department of Defense, moving his family to Laurel, MD, when the agency relocated to Ft. Meade, MD. He was ordained as a Permanent Deacon at St. Mathews Cathedral in 1978 and spent the next nearly 40 years ministering to the elderly, incarcerated, and shut-in, as well as officiating at baptisms, weddings and numerous other functions at St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
He was loved deeply and will be missed greatly.
Visitation will be on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home P.A., 313 Talbott Ave, Laurel MD 20707.
A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday September 9, 2017 at 10:00AM at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 8603 Contee Road, Laurel, MD 20708.
