Bruce Harris Obituary

Bruce Randolph Harris, 64, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away suddenly on May 25, 2023 at the home he shared with his wife of forty years. He was born on July 17, 1958, to Marshall Earl Harris and Marion Houchens Harris, in Washington, D.C.

Bruce was a prominent member of the West Laurel Community, serving on the Rec Council and organizing community events at West Laurel Swim Club. He spent years coaching his daughters through multiple sports with the Laurel Boys and Girls Club, and encouraging mayhem at swim team sleepovers and summer nights in the neighborhood. Bond Mill carnivals and Eleanor Roosevelt grad nights would not have been the same without his creative mind and endless dedication.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary of the Mills for 30 years and raised his children in the church. He had a strong relationship with God and his faith comforted him in life and death.

He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2014 after 36 years as a letter carrier. During that time, in 1997, he became a USSF soccer referee, went on to be a certified assigner for CASRA, and was still on the pitch mentoring young referees. Post-retirement, he transitioned his golf hobby into a new job at Northwest Golf Course in Montgomery County. In 2017 he (reluctantly) earned his Class A CDL to help run the family business, Wills Trucking & Excavating, Inc.

Bruce was happiest creating memories with his family and friends: skiing out west; golf trips to Myrtle Beach; eating Maryland crabs in the backyard and having Tac around the corner; snuggling with his puggle; vacationing in Ocean City; taking selfies to capture the moment; rarely missing a tailgate at FedEx Field to watch his Redskins; and most importantly, being a Poppi and his daily visits to see the babies. He left nothing undone.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna Harris, his three daughters, Amanda Harris, Emily Martins (Brian), and Brittney Harris; his oldest brother Brian Harris (Tina), his only sister, Bonnie Slusser (John), many nieces and nephews, and his four grandchildren, Audrey, Madison, Lincoln and Brooke Martins.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, his older brother Bradley Harris, and his father-in-law, Larry Weatherholtz.

Visitations will be held at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. 313 Talbott Avenue Laurel, Md. 20707 on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 6pm to 8pm; and on Thursday, June 1, 2023, from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm.  Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023 at 11am at Resurrection Catholic Church 3315 Greencastle Road Burtonsville, MD 20866.
