David Ahrens Weidner, 94, of Columbia, Maryland passed away on November 24, 2021. His wife of 67 years, Noreen Lucia Weidner, preceded him in death on May 10, 2020,
Born in Reading, PA on October 4, 1927, he was the son of the late Harold C. Weidner and Helen M. (Ahrens) Weidner. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Field Artillery and occupation forces in Germany and Austria.
Dave graduated from of Kutztown State College, Kutztown PA after the war. After a stint as a mathematics teacher in Berks County PA, Dave embarked on a 30-year professional career with the Social Security Administration retiring in 1982. He was one of the first mainframe computer programmers at Social Security in the late 1950’s.
Dave and Noreen were among the original residents of Columbia MD and lived there for nearly 50 years before their death.
Dave is survived by his three children, David Weidner (Margaret) of Monrovia MD, Susan Weidner of Wachapreague VA , Rebecca Weidner (Carl) of Baltimore MD, his grandsons Nicholas Weidner of Monrovia MD and Daniel Weidner of Brattleboro VT, and nephews Christopher Weidner of W. Long Branch NJ and Jay Weidner of Beaufort SC.
Dave was predeceased by his brothers, Harold Weidner and William Weidner, his sister Helen Ahrens Weidner Snyder, and a son-in-law, Carl Schoettler.
Dave was a lover of nature, long hikes, and New York Times crossword puzzles (always in pen). He was also a voracious reader of history, and a staunch supporter of civil and human rights. He was an accomplished cook, mastering styles ranging from his native Pennsylvania Dutch tradition to Asian fusion.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. He can be remembered through contributions to the American Civil Liberties Union or Doctors Without Borders US.
