Leila Genet Shawel

Leila Genet Shawel, age 17, passed away in Laurel, Maryland on Monday, April 8, 2024.

Leila was born on a beautiful summer day on August 23, 2006, in Seattle, WA to her loving parents, mother Bethel Necho Asres and father Getnet Estifanos Shawel.

In May 2008, she moved with her parents to Silver Spring, MD.  Leila attended Kindergarten and Elementary School at Galway Elementary.  She attended one year of middle school at Forcey Christian School. In November 2017, Leila and her family moved to North Laurel, MD where she attended her remaining 2 years of middle school.  In 2020, Leila enrolled at Atholton High School as a freshman. She was a member of the 2024 graduating class. Leila has performed very well in high school. Her SAT total score was 1570 which puts her in the 99th percentile. Her score was higher than or equal to 99% of students. Leila was interested in studying political science and international relations. Leila had worked very hard towards achieving her goal of making a meaningful contribution towards combating global peace crises and socioeconomic disparities. Leila was accepted for admission by several highly competitive colleges to major in political science and international relations.

Leila was a member of Becca’s Closet for 2 years and served in leadership role as social media manager.

Leila loves to travel. She enjoyed her travels to Ethiopia, Canada, Italy, Egypt, Morocco and Portugal.

Leila was an avid reader who enjoyed sharing her favorite books with her teachers and friends. She had a deep interest in books of history, philosophy, mystery and classical novels.

Leila is survived by her mother Bethel Asres and her father Getnet Shawel.
