Marie Simmons Obituary

Marie Jeanette Simmons, née Malinick, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away on April 19, 2021. She is survived by her loving husband of over 50 years, David Simmons, and her three sons - Jared (Mindy), Adrian (Cathy), and Grant (Margaret). She is also survived by her seven beloved grandchildren - Shane, Jackson, Madelyn, Luke, Felix, Caleb, and Rosa.

Marie was born in New York City, to George and Sophie Malinick. Marie was a young girl, the family moved to Seminole, Florida, where Marie fell in love with the Gulf of Mexico, the beautiful white sands, colorful sunsets, and warm water. She graduated from Seminole High School and went on to attend the prestigious University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, and graduated from the School of Business with her Bachelor’s degree.

After she graduated, she married her beloved David, and they spent happy years building their lives and careers together. They moved to Maryland for David’s education, and Marie became a business teacher in Howard County. They were blessed with their three sons, and once Marie had her youngest, she stepped away from formal teaching - though as a mother, she was a wonderful teacher, and continued to encourage intellectual curiosity in her children throughout her life. She was a huge part of her husband’s accounting small business, managing the financial and operational sides of the business while David could focus on his tax accounting services. They were an amazing team and worked together throughout their over 50-year-long marriage.

Marie was an avid fan of the arts, and loved music, theater, and movies, especially classic movies, 60s pop music, jazz standards, and Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. She and David enjoyed attending musical performances whenever they could. She always put her family first, and her sons will fondly remember their family traditions, including Polish-American Christmas dinner every year. Marie was a devout Catholic and taught her family to be spiritually strong, honorable members of their community. Marie will be missed by her whole family, and we are grateful that God blessed us with such an adoring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
