Donald Snyder Obituary

Donald Charles Snyder (age 74) passed away July 11, 2018 at home in Hyattsville, MD.  He was a graduate of Alma College in Alma, MI and obtained his PhD in Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD.  He taught Economics at both the University of Maryland and Howard University in Washington, D.C., going on to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) from which he retired after more than 20 years of Federal Service.  His contributions during that time included leadership on women's pension equity and other pension issues, the military reenlistment bonus program and the Military Human Resources System among others.  Most notably, as a member of  GAO's Defense Capabilities and Management Team, he led a review of the military's methods for destroying its stockpile of old and hazardous chemical munitions to ensure it was being done in a safe, efficient and timely manner with minimal impact on the environment.  Outside of work, his overriding passion was gardening.  Upon retiring, he became a Master Gardener, avidly tending to his own garden as well as those of others.  He is predeceased by his mother and father, Gertrude and Don Snyder of Alma, MI and survived by his life partner Louise ("Penny") Schiller.
