Freda Alexander Krionderis, 91, passed away on December 16, 2019, at Brightview at Westminster Ridge Assisted Living. She was born in Delmont, Pennsylvania on September 11, 1928 to Robert D. And Florence M. Alexander. She was the loving wife of Nick Krionderis, who passed away in 2010.
She is survived by her two sons, J. Michael Krionderis, his wife, Valerie and grandson, Nicholas; Jeffrey W. Krionderis, his wife Lillian and step-grandson, Chris.
Freda was the youngest of four siblings, who predeceased her. She graduated from Greensburg High School in 1946 and, having received a small scholarship, she was able to attend Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.
Her first job was with the West Penn Power Company as a home economist in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. She was involved in researching new recipes, demonstrating new electric appliances and holding cooking classes.
In 1951 she met her future husband, Nick Krionderis, who was serving in the US Navy when her sister and brother-in-law brought him to Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving dinner.
She moved to District of Columbia shortly after that in order to see more of Nick, and took a job as an administrative dietician at Garfield Hospital.
Nick left for a tour of duty in French Morocco in 1952, and she was offered a job as chief dietician at Anne Arundel General Hospital, where she worked until Nick’s return.
They were married in 1953 in her hometown of Delmont, Pennsylvania, on October 17. They moved to Virginia, where she worked as a cafeteria manager at the Treasury Department for the Marriot Corporation, and as a supervisor in the Arlington County School Lunch Program.
In 1956 her first son James Michael was born, and shortly thereafter they left for a tour of duty in Japan.
In 1958 they returned to Virginia, and in 1960 her second son Jeffrey William was born.
Nick retired from the Navy in 1962 and began working as a civilian at Fort Meade, Maryland. The family moved to Laurel, Maryland, where they lived for the next 41 years.
Freda was active in the Cub Scouts and worked on various committees for elementary, Jr. High and High Schools. She was very active with the PTA also. She became a substitute teacher for Prince George’s County Schools and worked at several West Laurel schools.
She served as a Deacon in the Laurel Presbyterian Church, as well as being active in the circle and pastoral care.
She was avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling, swimming and handwork crafts. When her grandson, Nicholas was born, she became a doting grandmother!
Freda lived a full and exceptional life full of family and close friends. Although she has moved on to be with the Lord, her memory will linger with us always!
