I am so upset that I did not learn of Miss Poe's death until now ... I was away when it occurred and somehow never saw an obituary. I grew up in Laurel ... later became a journalist and went on to a rich career in communications and theatre ... and I owe much of my early inspiration, motivation and confidence to this wonderful, remarkable woman. At each turn in my career and life, I owed a debt to her. She encouraged my writing (as bad as it was then) as a teenager and gently inspired me as it was clear writing would be the anchor of my life. I would have been in the front row of my old church for her memorial .... she was a model of grace, steely determination and deep humanity.

To the family,

My deepest condolences on such a great loss to your family and the community. I hope to you cherish the wonderful memories you shared together as they can be a source of comfort. May you also find comfort in the words at Revelation 21:3,4 where God promises soon to do away with all sickness and death.

My mother Frances Gore Wallich was Gertrude's first cousin. I have pleasant memories of our time with her family. She was an asset to her community and will be missed.

Please reach out to us. We are trying to get in touch with as many family members as possible. My mother remembers you well and she is here in Maryland now. Eleanor Poe Oakes is trying to get here as well.
