Michael James Baker

February 4, 1955 — December 19, 2016

Michael James Baker, of Jessup and formerly a longtime resident of Laurel, passed away unexpectedly on December 19, 2016 at his home.  He was 61.  He was born on February 4, 1955 in Regensburg, Germany to Virginia L. and the late James L. Baker.  He graduated from Laurel High School in 1973 and studied at PG Community College.  He worked at Duron Paint Plant in Beltsville and was forced into early retirement after a swimming accident in 1988 that resulted in losing his eyesight.  He then took on the role as “Mr. Mom”.  He stayed home and raised his children taking pride and cherishing every moment.  Michael’s passion was music.  After his accident that left him blind, he found a new purpose in life through music.  He formed a band and was the lead singer and guitarist for Mike Baker and the Blue Smoke Blues Band.  The band played throughout Maryland for over 20 years.

In addition to his father, Michael is preceded in death by his brother Dennis.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years Cindy Baker; loving children Patti P. Baker and Jordan J. Baker; brothers Kevin L. and Stephen Baker; nieces and nephews Miles, Payton, Christopher, and a host of family and friends.  Michael also cherished his dog Bella and grand-dog Luna.
