Raymond W. Burton, (94), of Laurel, MD passed away at his residence on April 27, 2018.
He was born in 1924 to Walter Thomas Burton and Minnie Maude Gaither in Fulton, MD. He was one of 13 children.
Raymond graduated from Montgomery Blair High School in 1943 and joined the United States Army in September of the same year. Raymond was assigned to the Army Air Force and was trained as an airplane mechanic. Raymond served with the 349th Bomb Group in the European Theater of Operations and flew many missions where his responsibilities included assisting the pilot of the A-26 light bomber in flight by keeping constant check on the mechanical functions of the plane and operating the central fire remote control gun turrets in aerial combat.
After being Honorably Discharged from the military in 1946 Raymond returned to Maryland and continued his studies, eventually earning a Master’s Degree in Accounting. He put his accounting skills to work and eventually landed a job with BGE. Raymond spent over 30 years with BGE eventually retiring at the age of 62.
Raymond enjoyed spending time working in his vegetable garden, watching golf on television and rooting for his favorite team the Washington Nationals.
Raymond is survived by a son, Raymond W. Burton, Jr, and a daughter, Patricia Burton. He also has one grandchild, Ruth Downs and 4 great grandchildren and one surviving sister, Charlotte Carr. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret E. (Ayton) Burton.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 30, 2018 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM & 6:00 – 8:00 PM at the Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A., 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD 20707. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2017 beginning at 11:00 AM in the Chapel of the Donaldson Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Laurel, MD.
