Yong Hui Gilbert, aged 68, passed away at her Laurel residence on December 2, 2019. She was born in Seoul, Korea in 1951, one of five sisters and one brother.
In 1974, she left Seoul to marry her husband Jim who was serving as a broadcast journalist. Together they traveled the world during Jim’s 29 year military career.
As a military spouse Yong gave freely of her time volunteering with many different organizations. She was an American Red Cross volunteer at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana where she was appointed to serve as the Vice Chairman. While stationed in Korea she served as the Vice Chairman of the Enlisted Wives Club. Wherever they were stationed, she always found time to give back to the community.
As the senior reservation agent for the Armed Forces Recreation Center’s Dragon Hill Lodge in Yongsan, Korea she provided training to all new reservation agents from 1988 to 1995.
Most recently, she served as a beauty advisor for Lancôme Cosmetics at Fort Meade, Maryland for over 20 years. While there Yong was recognized as a top sales associate for Military Post Exchanges worldwide. Yong was readily sought out by customers for her outgoing, energetic personality, beauty and superb knowledge of beauty products that met their needs.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her as a loving wife, mother, grandmother (Halmo), and friend. Family and friends will always remember her cooking of traditional Korean food for all to enjoy. Yong was immensely proud of her family and her spirit will live on in them.
Her memory will be cherished and kept alive by her husband Jim, who she has been married to for 45 years as of this month, and their two children. Peter is an Army Colonel with his wife, Kristen. Melanie is a Senior Manager for Johnson & Johnson with her husband Jeremy. They also have three grandchildren: Sophia (8), Evan (5) and Claire (4).
