Agnes Owusu Acheaw

Mrs. Agnes Wendy Berko Owusu-Acheaw, 70, was born on January 23, 1955 at Kpong, in the Eastern Region of Ghana, to Mr. Emmanuel Kwadwo Berko of Oyoko-New Juaben and Mrs Mary Nkansah Berko (Amma Brago) of Asokore-New Juaben in the Eastern Region, Ghana. Aggie, as she was affectionately called, was the fifth of her parents’ nine children and a descendant of the Takorase Asona Family of Nkwatia Kwahu and Asokore, New Juaben.

Aggie had her primary education at the Cocoa Research School (CRIG B) at New Tafo, in the Akyem Abuakwa. In 1967, she completed her middle school education at the Aburi Girls Demonstration Boarding School, where she sat the Common Entrance Examination and went to Ghana Secondary School in Koforidua from 1968 to 1973. After completing her 'O' levels, she worked briefly with the Intravenous Infusion Company in Koforidua. She then went to Holy Child Training College from 1975 to 1978 for her post secondary teacher training. After qualifying as a home science trained teacher, she taught at Nsawam Catholic School. After one year, Aggie relocated to Koforidua and taught at the Madonna School.

In 1980 she left the shores of Ghana to Liberia where she continued with her teaching career as a Home Science Specialist Teacher. While teaching, she developed and commercialized her sewing hobby. When she realized that sewing was bringing in more income, she gave up the teaching and concentrated more on sewing children's clothing.

In 1986, Mr. Sam Owusu Acheaw, got acquainted with Aggie through a mutual friend, on the former's visit to Liberia. When Aggie came to the United States in 1987, they had a chance encounter during one of Aggie’s visits to a friend in Washington, DC from Houston, Texas. Their long distance relationship blossomed to a beloved marriage of 34 years, that concluded only on Sam’s passing from cancer in August of 2024.

In 1987, she left the African Continent to come to the United States. In the early 1990s, Aggie nurtured her entrepreneurial spirit with the opening of Wendy’s Quality Fabrics, where she designed and tailored clothing for numerous individuals in DC and Maryland’s social circuits. By the late 90’s, Wendy as she was called by friends, returned to the classroom as a Home Economics Teacher at Buck Lodge Middle School in Prince George’s County. Ms. Owusu, as she was affectionately called by her students and colleagues, brought joy to many with her creative and delicious recipes. At the turn of the Millenium, Aggie returned to complete a secondary Bachelors of Science degree at Washington Adventist University in Healthcare Administration, with a focus in Healthcare Finance. In 2018, Wendy left her finance role at the National Children’s Center and retired.

Wendy was known for her impeccable sense of style, delicious cooking, hospitality, generosity, strength, and beautiful smile.

Aggie is survived by her and Sam’s only child, Pokuaa, her five living siblings, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends and loved ones she adored as family.
