Andy Joe Underwood

Andy Joe Underwood, 74, of Laurel, MD died peacefully on February 20, 2013 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. He was born in Statesboro, Georgia on November 10, 1938 to the late Bertie Mae (nee Prosser) and John D. Underwood. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Virginia (nee Poist) Underwood; son Michael A. Underwood and his wife Rose; daughter Kimberly A. Smith and her husband Burkeley; grandchildren Dana and Sean Underwood and Farrah and Burkeley Smith. He is also survived by a brother Lamar Underwood; sister's Sandra Kroop, Jean Moffat and Helen McMillan.
Andy moved to Laurel in 1954 when his father was stationed at Ft. Meade as an Army Colonel. They settled here when his father retired. Andy graduated from Laurel Senior High School in 1956. He played football on the only undefeated football team in the history of Laurel High School. He attended the University of Maryland and then went to work for the family business, Poist Gas Co. for 51 years. He joined the National Guard in 1957, and served 8 years, some of which was spent on active duty. Andy was an avid fisherman, bird hunter, boatsman and airplane pilot. He made many trips up and down the Inland Waterway to Florida, and was a long time member of the Annapolis Yacht Club. Andy spent a lot of his growing up years in Georgia. He loved the outdoors and nature. He especially loved spending time with his family, enjoying his children and grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O.
