Arthur P. Mcdermott

October 20, 1932 — August 9, 2017

Arthur Patrick McDermott peacefully passed away on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at his home in Burtonsville, Maryland. He was born on October 20, 1932 in Washington, D.C. to the late Arthur McDermott and the late Margaret O’Dea McDermott.

He attended Gonzaga College High School, received a B.A. from Georgetown University in 1954 and an M.A. from the University of Oregon in 1959. He served in the Navy as a lieutenant for two years and then as a reservist for eight.

After graduating from Oregon, he settled in Washington, first working briefly as a reporter in Alexandria and then as an editor at the Department of Commerce until his retirement.

He loved to travel, had a passion for photography and an avid interest in politics evidenced by the collection of political campaign buttons he amassed over the course of 70 years.

A loving husband and father and true friend, we will always love and remember him.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Alvina Soltis McDermott and 3 children, Sharon McDermott (Peter Noppenau) of Washington, D.C., Kevin McDermott (Tamara Fackler) and grandchildren Clare and Connor of Alexandria, VA. and David McDermott of Baltimore, MD.
