Barry Decker Smith

Dr. Barry Decker Smith, 78, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away on May 23, 2019.

He was born in 1940 to Clinton Travis Smith and Gretchen Decker Smith in Montrose, Pennsylvania.

He retired at the age of 71 after working at the University of Maryland as a Full Professor of Psychology for 43 years. He was an Eagle Scout who enjoyed reading, science, skiing, and expanding his knowledge by exploring the Internet.  Since retirement he continued his work as a Professor Emeritus.

He is survived by his son, Dr. Doug Smith (Angie); daughter, Dr. Deb Carter; sister, Sharon Strantz (George); sister-in-law, Mary Snyder (Gene); nieces, Nikki Metakes (Bill) and Kate Strantz; nephew, Tim Strantz (Karie); grand children, Stephen, Kati, Sam, Simon, Nick, Chris, and Mike; and great grandson, John.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth W. Smith, in 2003.

A viewing will be held at 9:30am on Monday 6/3/19, followed by services at 10 am at the Donaldson Funeral Home  313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, MD 20707. Interment will follow at the nearby Ivy Hill Cemetery at 101 Sandy Spring Road, Laurel, MD.

Memorial donations may be made to the Comprehensive Cancer Center at the Ohio State University.
