In Loving Memory

Benjamin “Benny” Basileo

February 7, 1925-February 17, 2018

Benjamin “Benny” Basileo, 93, transitioned to eternity with his family by his side at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington DC on February 17, 2018.

Benny was born on February 7, 1925 to Alberto and Lucia Basileo, in New York City, New York. Benny was an only child and moved to Italy with his mother at a young age.

Benny joined the United States Army in February 1946 while still living in Italy, serving as a translator during World War II (WWII). He completed over six years of service in the Army and National Guard before the end of his military terms of service in 1952. During his tenure, he was awarded an Army of Occupation Medal for performing occupation service in Europe during WWII.

In 1963, Benjamin married Maria Louisa Arrighi in Arezzo, Italy. They moved to the United States and had two sons, Alexander Francis Basileo and Alberto John Basileo. Benny began working as a Clerk for the United States Postal Service in 1950. Benny also drove a taxicab for many years to support his family. After divorcing in 1980, Benny focused on his duties as a devoted father to his sons. He continued to work for the US Postal Service for several years where he met his longtime companion, Evelyn Oliver. He was bestowed several awards and accolades for his 36 year, civil service career before retiring in 1986.

Benny enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, traveling, and watching soccer matches and horseracing. He was also a member of the American Legion for many years.

When Benny became ill in 2009, he moved to Laurel, MD to live with his son Alberto Basileo. Alberto and his girlfriend, Tiffany Brevard, took care of him over the years as he struggled with dementia and other health issues. Alberto hired his longtime caretaker, Bosede Fatusin, who assisted with ensuring that Benny was well cared for and received proper treatment over the years.

Benny is preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his two beloved sons, Alexander Basileo and Alberto Basileo and grandson, Quinton Richmond. He will also be missed by his extended family including Lisa Basileo; Evelyn Oliver and family; Bosede Fatusin and family; Dante Wicker Jr.; Semaje Wicker; Ashley Brevard; Tiffany Brevard and many friends and acquaintances.
