Brenda Joy Worthy-Bennett, 71 years old, passed away in Lanham, MD on October 18, 2022.

Born September 25, 1951 in Asheville, NC, first daughter of Frances Brown Johnson and only daughter of Theodore Greer and Frances Simpson Greer.

She lived a free-spirited life in Asheville prior to relocating to Maryland to join her newly connected biological family in 1979. No stranger to struggle, she forged a new life graduating from Margaret Murray Washington Vocational School in Washington, D.C. to pursue a career in nursing. She lived in Prince George's County and worked for various hospitals and clinics in the DMV specializing as a Dialysis Nurse. She worked hard to provide for her family, always desiring to do more…give more. Fiercely independent, tough, and lover of her work, her health ultimately led to a “forced retirement” in July 2020. Over the last two years, she did her best towork out her healing, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Brenda was a Christian, baptized in her youth, and worked out her faith in solitude and simplicity, often enjoying online services by Pastor Keith Battle of Zion Church and Pastor Joel Olsteen of Lakewood Church. She was a dog-lover, and enjoyed laughing, cooking, reading, QVC shopping, and binge watching Lifetime movies. She was a straight-shooter and believed in telling it as it is. Brenda was tough on the outside with the most sensitive, kind heart on the inside. She believed in “live and let live” and accepting people as is.

Brenda was preceded in death by daughter Shavonne Nicole Worthy, husband David Bennett, and adopted parents Theodore and Frances Greer. She is survived by biological mother Frances Johnson (Jesse), daughter Sonya Worthy Okolo (Nnamdi), granddaughter Joi Worthy, grandson Grant Okolo, step-daughter Belinda Bennett Carter (Bobby), and bonus-daughter Ann Marie Champ (Tim). She is also survived by siblings Crystal Evans (Ron), Jesse Johnson, Jr. (Norma), Janet Johnson, Elizabeth Frink (Jerry), James Johnson (Renay), Joanne Ashton (Otis), and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws, and friends.
