Charles A. Schuler

September 26, 1935 — February 5, 2025

Charles "Chopper" Augustus Schuler, 89, a man of great warmth and wisdom, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025, at the Dove House in Westminster, Maryland. Born on September 26, 1935, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Charles lived a life dedicated to his faith, family, and community, leaving a lasting legacy of love and devotion.

Charles was the beloved son of Charles E. Schuler and Marie K. Schuler. He is predeceased by his brother, Robert "Bob" E. Schuler, who passed away November 24, 2008. Chopper is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Florence Schuler; his two loving children, Lisa Kane (Spouse of Kenneth Kane) and Robert "Bob" Schuler; five cherished grandchildren, Lauren Murray (Spouse of Brian Murray), Wes Kane (Spouse of Brittany Kane), Bradley Schuler (Spouse of Kristen Schuler), Michael Schuler, and Matthew Schuler; and five adored great-grandchildren, Riley Murray, Brooks Murray, Charlee Kane, Madi Kane, and Lydia Kane.

Charles grew up working for the family business, Schuler's Pretzels. He then went on to serve his country proudly in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1961. After completing his service, he returned home to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, where he met the love of his life, Florence Martin. The couple married and began their life together, first moving to Arlington, Virginia, before settling in Laurel, Maryland where they built a loving home and resided for more than 55 years. Charles built a successful career at the Government Accountability Office (GAO), where he worked for over 35 years with dedication and integrity.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Charles always had a love for the game of basketball. He played his high school basketball for St. Nicholas in Wilkes-Barre, PA, making the All-Catholic league team and lettering 3 years in the sport. He went on to play college basketball for King’s College and graduated with an Accounting degree in 1958.  After his playing days, Chopper was a devoted fan of the Washington Redskins, Maryland Terrapins, Baltimore Orioles, and Golden State Warriors. He spent countless hours following his favorite teams, sharing updates, and discussing the latest games with friends and family. In his middle age and retirement, Charles discovered a love for tennis, playing several times a week for almost four decades. His passion for the sport led him to compete in and win numerous tournaments, including the Senior Olympics and various USTA events.  Beyond his accomplishments on the court, he cherished the camaraderie and lasting friendships formed through the game.

For over 55 years, Charles was a daily parishioner at St. Mary's of the Mills in Laurel, Maryland, where he served his church community with dedication and humility. Whether assisting with counting money for the church or driving the nuns of St. Mary's to fulfill their duties, Charles lived his faith through action. In retirement, he focused on his family, particularly his grandchildren, supporting their passions and interests and proudly standing as their #1 fan. Many will fondly remember Charles for his years as a travel basketball coach with the Laurel Boys' and Girls' Club, where he mentored and inspired young men for over 20 years.

In his final two years, Chopper lived with Florence in Sykesville, Maryland, close to his family, surrounded by love and support.

Charles will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his unwavering kindness, his signature smile, and a passion for life that he shared with all who knew him. His faith, devotion to his family, and contributions to his community serve as a lasting testament to a life well lived.
