Charles Robert Varner

Charles R. Varner, 88, passed away on July 19, 2022, surrounded by his family.

Born July 26, 1933 in Pennsylvania, he spent part of his childhood in orphanage care before settling in with his loving foster parents, Harold and Emma Luce.  He lived in Pittsburgh, PA until joining the Navy in 1951.  Upon discharge in 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Riddile.  He is a veteran of the Korean war.  He moved to Maryland in 1959 to begin his 32 year career at the National Security Agency, from which he retired in 1990.  He was a recipient of the Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the National Security Agency.  Charles was also an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Columbia.

Charles cherished his family, to whom he provided unwavering love.  He freely volunteered his time assisting several elderly neighbors and friends.  He enjoyed trips to the beach, his pets, and especially spending time with his grandson and best friend, Ken.

Charles is survived by his son, Gary Varner (Karen), daughter, Susan Grauel (Betty), and his grandson, Ken Grauel.  He is also survived by his brother, Donald Luce; his nieces, Sarah Garner and Jen Plant; and their families.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara.

Services will be private.  Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Charles Varner to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Doctors Without Borders.
