Clarence Edmund Curtis, Iii

Lt. Col. Clarence Edmund Curtis, III (Ret.) “Curt” to his friends died on August 21, 2017 in Ellicott City, MD. He was 83. Curt was husband of 49 years to the late Jane Anne  (nee Daly). Loving father of Curt, IV and his wife Sandra. Loving grandfather of  Logan and Emily. Brother of Marilyn Curtis McKean and her husband Joe.

Friends may call at the Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. 313 Talbot Avenue, Laurel, MD. 20707 on Sunday August 27 from 3-5+7-9 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered on Monday, 12:30p.m. at St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church, 114 St. Mary’s Place, Laurel. MD. Interment Maryland State Veterans Cemetery, Crownsville.

Curt was an active parishioner of St. Mary of the Mills Church, as a choir member and Lector.  He was also a member of the Laurel Senior Friendship Club, where he served as newsletter editor, as a vice president, as its budget officer and as director of its computer learning center. He was president of the Atlas Corporation, a non-profit which provided citizen’s advocacy and funding for a new regional senior center, which opened in August, 2011.

Born in Oklahoma City, OK, Curt Curtis spent his formative years in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended college under the Affiliated Colleges Engineering Program, and in June, 1956 graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was sworn in as an Army Second Lieutenant by his father that same day and graduated from Middlebury College, Vermont the following Monday.

After a brief engineering stint with MacDonnell-Douglas Corporation in St. Louis, MO, Curt began a military career that spanned 28 years, including 2 tours of duty in Germany and two tours in Korea.

After command assignments with Korea’s First US Corps and the First Infantry Division, Curt received his MBA from Syracuse University in 1964. It was in Syracuse that he met Jane Anne Daly. They were married in Brasher Falls, New York on October 15, 1966.

Curt was selected for the Army Comptrollership Program, and served as Financial Manager of Tobyhanna Army Depot in PA, Budget Officer for US Forces in Korea, and as Deputy Financial Manager for the Defense Industrial Supply Center in Philadelphia. He retired from the Army at Ft. Meade in 1984, after serving as Chief of Management Analysis in the Office of the Comptroller, First Army. He then went to work for NSA, where he held a variety of Senior Research and Development Analyst positions over the course of 11 years, retiring again in December 1995.

Curt was a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. He was holder of several decorations, including the Army Commendation Medal (3 awards), Army Meritorious Medal (2 awards)Joint Service Meritorious Service Medal and the Order of the Legion of Merit.
