Rockville

David Anthony Fonseca, of Gaithersburg, MD, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2022, with his family by his side.

Born in Cambridge, MA on May 9, 1942 to proud Portuguese parents Joaquim and Mathilde Fonseca, he was raised in Belmont, MA. Growing up in a close-knit community of neighbors, he forged life-long friendships, including those with Larry McCormick and Linda Barry. David graduated from Belmont High School in 1960.

Driven from an early age by a deep interest in electronics, he went on to study electrical engineering, graduating from the Wentworth Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, and the University of Maryland. He was a member of the Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi engineering honor societies.

On February 16, 1968 David married the love of his life, Agnes Claire Waldron, also of Belmont, a nursing student whom he met at a volleyball game. They soon moved to Laurel, MD where David continued his education and began his career at the National Security Agency (NSA).

David and Agnes made their home on Marton Street in Laurel, where they raised their two sons, Thomas and Mathew. David devoted his time and talents to the Laurel community, serving multiple terms as a PTA president. He was among a dedicated group of parents who gave countless hours of their time organizing, coaching, and managing the soccer program of the Laurel Boys and Girls Club in the late 1970s and early 1980s. He subsequently volunteered in a similar capacity with the National Capital Soccer League (NCSL). David and Agnes were parishioners of St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church for 46 years.

David enjoyed a rewarding career with the NSA. He was quietly devoted to the Agency’s mission, and constantly inspired by his talented and innovative colleagues. David retired as a Branch Chief in 2002.

In his retirement, David and Agnes enjoyed travel, and were avid and regular supporters of theater in the DC-Baltimore region. They were fixtures on the sidelines, stands, and auditoriums of their grandchildrens’ athletic and academic events.

David is survived by his wife of 54 years, Agnes Claire Fonseca, also of Gaithersburg; his sons Thomas (Noelle) of Rockville, MD, and Mathew (Brett) of Gettysburg, PA; his grandchildren Andrew of Ft. Benning, GA, Joshua (Alexis) of Killeen, TX, John David of Destin, FL, Aidan of Rockville, MD, and Caroline and Natalie of Gettysburg, PA; and his great-grandson George of Killeen, TX.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on August 20th, 2022 at 10 AM at St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church, 114 St. Mary’s Place, Laurel, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center at the University of Maryland, or the Maryland SPCA.
