David J. Forbes

David J. Forbes of Laurel, MD, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026, at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. He was a dedicated husband, a much-loved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, soldier, and a friend to many.

David was born in Canton, OH on September 27, 1948 as the first born to Robert and Helen Daily Forbes. He had two siblings, Barbara Forbes LaRocco (who predeceased him), and brother James Scott Forbes (Lisa Green Forbes) of Rochester, NY. He enjoyed an idyllic small-town childhood in LeRoy, NY and was active in the Boy Scouts.

David graduated from LeRoy High School in 1966 and by the Spring of 1967 he had completed an Army medical specialist course. He then enlisted in the Army at age 19 in Fall 1967. He completed two valiant tours in Vietnam as a Green Beret combat medic, earning a National Defense Service Medal, a Meritorious Service Commendation, a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and Silver Star among many other service-related decorations and medals. When he returned from Vietnam, he attended SUNY Brockport on the GI Bill. He was proud of his notable educational accomplishments, being the first in his family to earn a college education and going on to receive advanced degrees from Elmira College, Pepperdine University, and the University of Maryland.

Later in life, he returned to his passion for medicine and serving others in the military, becoming a Nurse Practitioner and working at Walter Reed counseling soldiers suffering from PTSD. Aside from the Army, he also served his country faithfully in the Marines and US Air Force for a total military service record of over 30 years. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College while serving in the US Army. Even after retirement, he could not let service go. He worked in behavioral health and only paused for health reasons.

David is survived by his devoted wife Stella Forbes, with whom he spent 33 loving years traveling and enjoying life. He leaves behind his three daughters Kim Bloome (Chris) of Liverpool, NY, Jen Forbes (David Weller) of Rochester NY, and Anne Michelle Forbes (Rae Obejero) of Richmond, VA. David adored his granddaughter, Julie Bloome, creating many cherished memories. David loved his dogs Major and Benson fiercely, and is also predeceased by his affectionate West Highland Terriers Angel, Tucker, and Jack.

Of all of his achievements, David was most proud of being a father to his 3 daughters. David was the perfect 'Girl Dad'. He never missed a moment to celebrate every life achievement. He was incredibly supportive of Anne's theater career, Jen's career in education, and Kim's family. Even when distance was hard, he went to extremes to be present and make memories all together.

David and Stella were introduced to Grace Community Church in 2008 by their daughter Anne when she was in middle school. Shortly after, they became part of a small group. In 2020, David and Stella had the opportunity to travel to Israel with Grace Community Church. The trip left a lasting impression on both of them and further solidified their faith and relationship with the church community.

He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His final resting place will be on the hallowed grounds of Arlington National Cemetery. We will come together for a Celebration of Life at Grace Community Church, 8200 Old Columbia Rd, Fulton, MD on Friday, August 7, 2026 at 3pm.
