David Nixon

d. April 26, 2015

David Edwin Nixon, 83 passed away in his home suddenly April 18, 2015.

He was born September 7, 1931 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Cyrus and Floretta Nixon.  After graduating from Chattanooga High School in 1949, he joined the United States Navy where he served in the Korean War as a Fire Control Technician onboard the USS Chara (AKA-58/AE-31.)  In 1954 he took a position at RCA as an electronics instructor for the US Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma.  This position, and others, kept him travelling throughout the western United States and the world during the 1950’s and 1960’s.  While working in El Paso, Texas in 1955 he met the love of his life, Priscilla LaFlamme.  They were married on July 10, 1959 and lived in numerous locations in the U.S. before deciding to settle permanently in Laurel, Maryland in 1966 where they raised their two children, Mark Nixon of Odenton, Maryland and Cynthia Nixon of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

David became a field engineer for the Department of Defense at Fort Meade, Maryland in 1968, eventually retiring in 1993.  After retirement, David and Priscilla spent several summers enjoying life together in the hill country around Newland, North Carolina.  They quickly made friends and before long had resumed their love of square dancing.  David played guitar and honed his pool game.  He was widely known to be an excellent pool player and instructor.  In later years, when Priscilla’s health required special attention, David became her sole caregiver.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of 53 years, Priscilla Nixon, his parents and his brother Richard Nixon of Wichita Falls, Texas.  Survivors include his son, daughter, daughter-in-law Heather Nixon, granddaughter Susannah Nixon of Odenton, Maryland, grandson Reid Nixon, his wife Ashley Nixon and great granddaughter Ella Nixon of Spokane, Washington.

A private memorial service is planned for a later date.  Interment will be with his wife at the Crownsville State Veteran’s Cemetery in Crownsville, Maryland.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made in honor of David Nixon to the Wounded Warrior Project at https://support.woundedwarriorproject.org.
