Derek John Thiessen

October 25, 1934 — May 4, 2014

Col. Derek John Thiessen was born in Fairbanks, Alaska Territory, Oct. 25, 1934 to Ellen (Larsen) and John Jackson Thiessen. His childhood was spent exploring California and nearby states with his family as they followed his father's mining career. He graduated from Nevada City (CA) High School in 1952 and from the University of California-Berkeley in 1957. He joined the US Army and served his country with pride and distinction for 30 years, rising to the rank of colonel before his retirement in 1987.
Derek married the love of his life, Nancy Llewellyn Norton, on May 10, 1963, and they shared nearly 51 years of very happy and love-filled marriage. He is survived by Nancy, their three children - Jennifer Lynne Newman (Dennis), John Kenneth (Simona Maggini) and Karin Marie, their three granddaughters - Kathleen, Julie and Anne Newman, and his siblings - Wayne, Brian, Jacky Tennis, and Craig.
Derek will be remembered for the love and laughter that he brought to his family. Although he served his country with pride, his favorite role in life was being a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather. We will miss him and the love, joy, and laughter he added to our lives.
Funeral services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka KS 66675 or woundedwarriorproject.org
