Dorothy Dell Vermillion, 94, of Laurel, Maryland, passed away on September 13, 2026.
Dorothy was born on January 20, 1932, in El Paso, Texas, to Harold Sanford and Dorothy (Mickens) Sanford. She grew up in Washington, D.C., and married Cornelius "Neal" Vermillion in 1952. Following their marriage, they moved to Maryland, where they made their home and raised their family. Dorothy worked as a school bus driver for 18 years, but above all, her greatest joy was her family.
She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who was always there for those she loved. Spending time together as a family, including their regular Sunday outings, remained an important part of her life. To her family, Dorothy was simply the best mom, grandma, and great-grandma they could have asked for.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda Munnelly; her son, Jon "Mick" Vermillion and his wife, Loretta; her brother, William "Bill" Sanford and his wife, Kathleen "Kathy"; her grandchildren, John Munnelly, Marcie Vermillion, Melissa "Missy" Vermillion, and Laura Selva and her husband, Alexander "Alex"; and her great-grandchildren, Anthony "Tony" Vermillion, Michael Vermillion, Liam Vermillion, and Cameron Selva.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Cornelius "Neal" Vermillion; her parents, Harold Sanford and Dorothy (Mickens) Sanford; and her sister, Virginia "Sandy" Hager, and Sandy's husband, Norman "Sonny" Hager. A viewing will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. in Laurel, Maryland. The family will depart for Fort Lincoln Cemetery in Washington, D.C., at 10:30 a.m., where Dorothy will be laid to rest beside her husband and parents.
