Elizabeth Joan (Loughlin) Winkert, age 89, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, October 14th 2022.
Born April 26th 1933 in Brooklyn, New York, daughter of William and Josephine (Paddle) Loughlin, she grew up in Bay Ridge, living several years with her beloved grandparents from Scotland, George and Elizabeth Paddle. She graduated from Fort Hamilton High School, where she enjoyed working on the school newspaper. She met a smart college fellow from Flatbush, John Wynia Winkert, at a summer church camp. In time, he proposed to her on the Staten Island Ferry, and they were wed in September 1951, only after her graduation.
Together they raised four sons, living in New York, Tennessee, and Maryland, often relocating in pursuit of John’s medical research and teaching opportunities. Elizabeth earned a degree from Hunter College in 1961, but set aside her passion for journalism to work for many years as a medical technologist. After John tragically died in 1986, she started a new chapter in Florida and thrived there for many years before moving back to Maryland in 2014. She loved reading, gardening, ceramics, genealogy, travelling with her best friend Martha, the companionship of her Sheltie dogs, and serving God in her church – they called her “faithful Liz”. She really enjoyed hosting family visits to Florida through the years and interacting with her grandchildren as they grew.
Elizabeth is survived by her 4 sons and their families including 12 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren: John (wife Catherine; children Katie, Jack, Ally, Patrick); George (wife Beverley; children Cassie Tobias [husband Michael and son Obadiah], Jonathan [wife Jocelyn and daughter Audrey], David [wife Jordan]); Thomas (former wife Gina; children Rebecca, Jenny, Thomas); Daniel (wife Stacey; children Atticus, Arya). She is also survived by her younger sister, Martha LaFrance, who she miraculously first met late in life.
On Sunday October 23rd, at Grace Baptist Church (7107 Cherry Lane, Laurel, MD 20707) there will be a Viewing for family (1:00pm), Visitation with friends (2:00pm), and Memorial Service (3:00pm) with repast to follow.
Burial will be at 10:00am on Monday October 24th at Lakemont Memorial Gardens (900 W Central Ave, Davidsonville, MD 21035).
In loving memory of Elizabeth, gifts may be sent to Grace Baptist Church or Jacksonville Sheltie Rescue (www.jacksonvillesheltierescue.org).
