George Currie, or better known to many as Pop Pop, was born February 19, 1923, and passed peacefully in his home of 56 years in Laurel MD on February 9, 2026 just shy of his 103rd birthday.

Born in Philadelphia, he lived in the same neighborhood as his extended family, growing up he spoke of playing ball in the streets and spending summers in Wildwood at his Grandparents home along with many fascinating stories of his youth. He attended West Catholic Preparatory High School in Chester PA. where rowed crew and graduated with honors. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy and trained as a pilot for World War 2. He loved flight and continued to serve in the reserves for 20 years after he left active service, he flew over 20 different Naval Aircrafts in his time of service and then instructing in Pensacola Florida. He attended Villanova University on the GI bill and considered himself to be a very senior student compared to the then age of his contemporaries, he was very proud of his accomplishment of receiving an Electrical Engineering degree as a “mature” student.

During his career as an Electrical Engineer he worked with Bosch Arma Aerospace, where he was fortunate enough to be a part of this countries’ history in space flight development. These opportunities caused the family to move around a bit in the early days, NY to California back to NY then eventually to MD where they would settle (Nana said no more moving!). It was through his cousin Jane that he met the love of his life Jane Nolan and they married January 20, 1950. Together they had 3 children Kevin, Sharon and Donna and enjoyed a beautiful family life for many years together.

He was a wonderful loving, caring, fun Father and Pop Pop to so many. A true historian with all of his years of experience on this earth and his eternal quest for knowledge, he always wanted to share it and impart a little wisdom if you would let him. Having lived through the great depression and many difficult periods of our history he had a deep respect and love for life, he appreciated everything and took nothing for granted. A true force of nature, always positive and ready to solve any problem, find the solution and enjoy the accomplishment. He was very thoughtful and always aware of the others around him. Most of all he loved his people and collected so many over his lifetime, he was always open and present when spending time with others, he actively listened and genuinely enjoyed sharing time with them. He made friends easily and welcomed them into his life and family. He could always be seen on the sidelines cheering on his grandchildren at all of their games, concerts, presentations and ceremonies, if he was included-he would be there! He loved to travel and see the world and was always willing to go anywhere, anytime with almost anyone, he considered this all great adventures and loved new experiences and learning about the world he lived in.

A gentle giant, patient and kind, a true man of God with unwavering faith and a mind like a steel trap our Pop Pop could tell stories like none other. He is so loved and will be missed by so many but we can still hear him in our hearts and that is where he will remain.
