Celebrating the Life and Legacy of George A. Roberts
George A. Roberts was born in Scarborough, on the beautiful
island of Tobago to Audrey Edwards and Herbert Cruickshank.
On September 27, 2026, George passed away at his home in
Laurel, Maryland, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of faith,
family, friendship, service, and love.
At the heart of George’s life was his beloved wife, Mary Ann
Roberts. George loved his wife deeply. Together, they built a life
filled with companionship, faith, family, and adventure. They
especially enjoyed traveling together, visiting many countries
and states and creating treasured memories along the way.
A Life of Learning and Service
George earned his bachelor’s degree from Andrews University
in Michigan and began his professional career as a high school
Math and Science teacher in Mississippi. His gift for teaching
and helping others would remain a defining part of his life.
George later worked for Prince George’s County Public Schools
for approximately 20 years as an IT administrator and
technician. To simply say that George was valued by his
colleagues would be an understatement. He was a dedicated
professional and an exceptional team member, but more
importantly, he was a true friend.
Whether he was stepping in to solve a difficult technical
problem, mentoring a fellow team member, helping a student
intern, or simply offering encouragement, George was a
comforting and steady presence. He was someone people knew
they could depend upon.
A Man of Faith
George was a devoted student of the Bible and the writings of
Ellen G. White. His faith was not something he merely
professed—it was reflected in the way he lived and served
others.
George was a faithful Elder and served for many years as Head
Elder of Light Bearers Mission Seventh-day Adventist Church.
He was instrumental, along with other passionate founding
members, in establishing the church, which recently celebrated
20 years of ministry and service to the community.
Known affectionately by many names—Mr. Roberts, Georgie
Porgie, Brother George, Elder Roberts, Brother-in-Law, and
simply George—he was respected for his steady and consistent
leadership. To many, he was also a trusted spiritual mentor and
friend.
His service to the church extended far beyond his role as an
Elder. George taught Sabbath School, supported youth ministry
and hospitality, participated in prison ministry, helped feed the
homeless, collected and provided needed items for shelters, and
gave generously of his time wherever there was a need.
Perhaps one of his greatest gifts was simply being present.
George knew how to listen. When someone was carrying a
burden and needed a compassionate ear, he was there.
His Christian faith was expressed not only through the positions
he held, but through the lives he touched.
Family, Friendship and Joy
George loved his family deeply and especially cherished his
mother, Audrey.
He shared the bonds of family with his siblings Pamela Papillon
(David), Doyle Roberts (Tonya), Sandra Smiley, Carol Tomsavic
(Billy), DeWayne Roberts, Deolinda, Yvette, and Luana, along
with other beloved family members.
George was also a cherished nephew of Wesley Roberts, James
Roberts, Jozsef Roberts, Gloria, Denise, Margaret St. John,
Claudia Sandy, Emelda Graham, and Sharon Richards.
He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Cruickshank;
his maternal grandparents, Meleta Sandy and Lavatha Roberts;
his brother, Garvin Roberts; his aunts, Beryl Roberts and Leticia
King; and his uncles, Ebenezer Roberts and Elvis Richards.
George was also deeply connected to his extended family
through marriage. His father-in-law is Joseph Montoute, whose
wife, Esther, preceded him in death. His in-laws include Susan
Green (Isaac); the late Peter Alexander (Connie); Augustine
Decaille (Unice); Samuel Decaille; Noel Alexander (Liz); Reeze
Montoute; and Errol Montoute (Bernadette).
George leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. He
shared an especially close relationship with his niece, Crystal
Bailey, whom he loved and regarded as a daughter.
A Life Well Lived
George was an outstanding Scrabble player and enjoyed the
challenge, fellowship, and friendly competition the game
brought.
The true measure of George’s life cannot be found in a job title,
a church position, or even the many responsibilities he faithfully
carried.
It is found in the people he helped.
The people he taught.
The people he mentored.
The people he listened to.
The people he prayed with.
The people he served.
And, most importantly, the people he loved.
George A. Roberts lived a life grounded in faith and dedicated to
service. He was a loving husband, devoted son and brother,
cherished uncle and brother-in-law, teacher, mentor, Elder,
colleague, and friend.
His passing leaves an emptiness that cannot easily be filled, but
his influence continues in the lives of the countless people he
touched.
For those who knew and loved him, George’s legacy will remain
one of faithfulness, humility, wisdom, service, friendship, and
love.
Though we mourn his passing, we celebrate the life he lived, the
faith he demonstrated, the family he cherished, and the example
he leaves behind.
George served faithfully, loved deeply, gave generously, and he
will be dearly missed.
