Gregory L. (Sr.) Jones

July 1, 1954 — May 8, 2018

Laurel, MD

Gregory Leonard Jones, Sr. (also known as “Big J” “JJ”) was born on July 1, 1954 in San Antonio, Texas. He transitioned to Eternal rest in Columbia, MD. He was surrounded by family and friends.

Gregory was the son of Jane Fields and Walter Jones, both of whom preceded him in death. He and his siblings, Sheree, who also preceded him in death, Lathell, Walter and Rodney were raised by his late grandmother Gertrude Ware lovingly known as “Nana” in Corpus Christi, TX.

As a young adult, Gregory enlisted in the United States Army where he served for twelve years as a Military Intelligence Specialist, obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. During his military career, he was stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, Taipei, Taiwan, Berlin and Munich, Germany, Ft. Stewart and Ft. Gordon, GA. After separating from the military, he continued his career for 21 years as a civilian working for the Naval District of Washington and the Department of Interior, United States Geological Survey.

Gregory was a die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan that loved music, dancing and cooking. He had a good heart and a million-dollar personality. He was loved by all that crossed his path. If he was not passing out one of his many volumes of “G’s Grooves” CDs, he was writing a poem or making you laugh with his jokes. The thing he joked about the most was playing with his imaginary dog called, “SPOT”, usually at other people’s expense.

Gregory leaves, cherishing the memory of sixteen beautiful years of marriage to his loving, caring, and devoted wife, Sharon. Their romance started with a simple dance request at a cabaret at the DC Armory and the rest is history.

In addition to his wife, Gregory adored his family, especially his children Gregory Jr. (Kimberly), Xavier, his only daughter Kai (Malik) and son Kelly (Kurtina). Gregory is also survived by fourteen grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

Gregory led a full life and touched so many people with his acts of kindness and generosity.
