Horace James Spencer

Horace James Spencer was born to Estella and Azariah Spencer on May 17, 1946 in Clarendon, Jamaica. He was the youngest of eight children and was lovingly referred to as the “Wash Belly” of their family.

He attended the Stewarton Basic School followed by Richmond Park Primary School. Horace, who enjoyed going to church and helping with his parent’s farm, matured to be a loving and God fearing young man. Eventually, he left Clarendon for Kingston, Jamaica where he found employment at the Cigarette Company of Jamaica. It was during this time that he fell in love with Rosemarie Hall and fathered two beautiful children: Marsha and Sheldon.

Aspiring for a better life, he left Jamaica for the United States of America and began working at the Duron Paint Company with his older brother Rupert Spencer. He was a dedicated employee who was highly regarded by his peers and management up until his retirement after over 20 years of employment.

During his retirement, Horace was able to pursue his other interests which included cooking and playing dominoes. Sitting with his radio on his back porch while listening to sweet reggae music along with tending his garden of callaloo and scotch bonnet peppers were favorite pastimes. It brought him great joy to be able to distribute the harvest from his garden to his neighbors and friends. Horace was able to share this time of his life with his wife Lilieth whom he married in 2011.

Mourning his unexpected death on January 8, 2019 is his wife Lilieth Spencer; three children Marsha Blue, Sheldon and Dana Spencer; brothers Winston and Rupert Spencer; four grandchildren Daeja and Noah Blue, Brie and Jace Spencer; two daughter in-laws; 41 nieces and nephews; and many relatives and friends.

May his soul rest in peace. Let the light forever shine on him until we meet again.
