J. Donald Henyon

John Donald “Don” Henyon, 89 passed away peacefully on September 12th 2015 at Vantage House in Columbia, Maryland.  Don was born on January 8th 1926 in Washington D.C.  He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Isabel and was released from active duty in 1946.  He joined the District of Columbia Air National Guard in 1948 and was called to active duty in the U.S. Air Force in 1951, assigned to the 61st Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, Selfridge Air Force Base, Michigan.  He and the family moved to Maryland after military service and he began working in the banking business.  He later moved to Highland, MD in 1960 and joined The Citizens National Bank of Laurel, MD in 1962.  During his more than 40 years with the bank, he served in different positions with the last being President, Chairman & CEO of the bank before retiring.  Although not being an official resident of Laurel, he always considered himself a “corporate citizen” and served the city in many capacities including The Board of Trade, The Historical Society and The Chamber of Commerce, in addition to the Maryland Tourism Board.  Don loved attending car shows and over the years restored many automobiles, his favorite being his 1956 Chevy.  He is survived by his wife of 67 years Jean Westerman Henyon, son Michael (Christine) of Mt. Airy, MD and daughter Catherine (David) Brown of Hayesville, NC, grandchildren Travis, Emily, McKenna, Brennan, Kaley and one great-grandchild Ellie.  A memorial visitation service will be held at the Donaldson Funeral Home in Laurel, MD on Thursday, September 17th from five to eight p.m.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in the name of Don Henyon to the Christian Center of Concern, P.O. Box 973, Hamilton, AL 35570 or Gilchrist Hospice Care, Inc., 5537 Twin Knolls Rd., Suite 434, Columbia, MD 21045.
