James M. Athey, affectionately known as “Spike”, passed away on October 28th, 2024. He was 85 years old.
Born on June 21st, 1939, to James and Betty Athey, Spike was a Laurel native who graduated from Laurel High School in 1957 and enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly thereafter. During this time, he also met his wife, Shirley Faye Athey, with whom he was lovingly married 62 years before her passing in 2021.
Spike never met a person he couldn’t talk to; he was a very generous and kind man. He also had many hobbies, including golf, crossword puzzles, and handicapping horses and dogs. Travelling also brought him great joy; he especially liked visiting Atlantic City, Biloxi, Mississippi and Las Vegas. He was also a member of the Moose and Elks lodge.
Mr. Athey is survived by his sons: James J. Athey and Ray Henderson; Grandchildren Jamie Athey, Tyler Getman, and Stephanie Flint; Great-Grandchildren John, Jaxon, and J.R. Flint. He is predeceased by his wife, Shirley Faye Athey; Parents James and Betty, and brother John. In addition, he is survived by many dear friends.
Relatives and Friends may visit at the Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, Maryland 20707 on Friday, November 8th at 11am, with a funeral service at 12pm. Interment with military honors will follow the funeral service at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Laurel, Maryland. Friends will be received at Jim’s house after the burial at 243 Ironshire S. in Maryland City.
