James N. Nichols, 69, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022 in Washington, DC. He was born on November 19, 1952 to Geraldine H. Nichols, in Queens, New York. He was raised by his foster parents Adelaide Brown and David T. Brown, amongst a host of foster siblings and extended family. Once James graduated high school, he went on to serve in the United States Air Force. Some of his military assignment highlights included Japan, California, and South Dakota. He eventually advanced to the rank of Staff Sergeant, with various certifications, letters of commendation, and the honor of retiring after 20 years of service.
James' Christian faith was a huge guiding force in his life. Divinely, while stationed in California, he met J. Stephanie and her son, William. They married on January 31, 1981. Before leaving California, James became an Ordained Minister, always affectionately honoring his longtime mentor and friend, Minister John Dunbar, as a true Brother in Christ. James and J. Stephanie went on to have 3 more girls while stationed in South Dakota- Contessa, Jessica, and Adele. Once he retired and their family relocated to Laurel, MD, they welcomed their final daughter, Charita. They remained married for 33 years until J. Stephanie sadly passed away on March 2, 2014.
James N. Nichols was a powerful prayer warrior, a pitch perfect singer, a sincere worshipper, and a dedicated provider. He believed in the importance of family and was committed to living a life that honored God in every way. Post-military retirement, James humbly served as a faithful and loyal cleaning professional at various sites such as the National Agricultural Library, the National Aboretum, and even an Embassy located in downtown DC for the span of nearly 30 years.
He is survived by his unique children: William, Contessa, Jessica, Adele, and Charita and 9 amazing grandchildren.
