Her nursing career began as a staff nurse in numerous departments of Prince George’s Hospital Center. She worked as an inspector of health care facilities for both county and state agencies. In addition she worked in a number of roles in nursing homes including infection control, quality assurance nurse and Director of Nursing. Finally, in 1989, as founder of Joanne Wilson’s Gerontological Nursing Ventures, P.A., Joanne and her team pioneered a variety of consultation services to improve life and quality of care for residents of nursing homes. The consultative services included quality assurance, systems development and education and in-service training on a wide variety of topics for use in the long-term care field until she ‘retired’ in 2008. She always identified herself as a nurse even in retirement.
Joanne was a life-long avid reader. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, travel, painting, gemstones, teal and elephants. While serving as a military spouse overseas, Joanne took several classes which allowed her to run a cake decorating business, create a number of ceramic items still used for family holiday celebrations and learned to cook Chinese food. All family members still enjoy eating Chinese food as she did.
Joanne will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Joanne was a long-time supporter of various charitable organizations. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: Habitat for Humanity, Maryland Food Bank, Special Olympics, St. Jude’s, or the USO.
