John Thomas Davis, loving husband and father, passed away on December 22, 2024. He was born in Whipple, WV on January 9, 1935, to the late James and Mary Davis. Tom graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, WV. He went on to work in construction, eventually starting his own heavy equipment brokerage company, Davisco, Inc. in 1989.
Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Anna Clay Davis. They had been married for 61 years when she died on January 4, 2016. He is also preceded in death by two brothers, James and Kenneth. Tom is survived by his six children: Clay Jonathan Davis (Robin), Janelle Brawley (Neil), Jennifer Lawrence, Jo-Lynn Davis, Jacinda Davis (Kris Slava) and Justin Davis (Kate). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Tom enjoyed bass fishing, summers in Maine, and spending time with his family and friends. He was a man of few words but loved to share stories about growing up in West Virginia. Tom loved practical jokes – fake cans of peanuts, a well-hidden fart machine or a rubber chicken at the foot of your bed. At the same time, he’d give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He never won the lottery, but he liked to play. Conversely, he was reluctant to play but he and Phyllis never lost a game of Canasta. He rooted for the Washington Redskins and West Virginia Mountaineers. Above all, he was devoted to his wife and children, working most of his life to provide for and support them.
A memorial service will be held in the chapel of the Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A., 313 Talbott Ave., Laurel, MD on Saturday January 11, 2025, beginning at 2pm. Flowers are welcome as are contributions to the Maine Medical Center or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
