John Donald Schmidt 11/30/1935 - 04/09/2023

John Donald Schmidt (87) of Laurel, MD died on April 9, 2023. He was born on November 30, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He came to College Park, MD to join the rifle team at the University of MD.  While on the rifle team he met his future wife, Margaret G. Schmidt. Following his subsequent military service in the Army as a cryptographer he married Margaret on October 18, 1958.  John worked with his father as a home builder where they built the house that he has lived in with his family for the last 60 years.  Following his father’s death, he became a cabinet maker and ultimately opened his own shop with his partner Mike Moody. John was an avid model train enthusiast and member of the Train Collectors Association. He is survived by his son Scott; daughter-in-law Debbie; daughter Cynthia; and his grandchildren Alexander and Yelena Schmidt.

Visitation is scheduled at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. in Laurel, MD on Thursday, April 27, 2023, from 5-8pm. Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church, Laurel, MD on Friday, April 28, 2023, at 11am. Interment follows immediately at St. Mary's cemetery.
