Joseph Smith

Joseph Smith, 61, a resident of Laurel passed away on August 18, 2013 at his residence. He was born March 21, 1952 to the late Hazel and Edna (Green) Smith in Sumter, S.C. He served in the United States Army from December 1976 and retired from the National Guard in April 1996. He moved to Bronx, New York where he began a career with the New York City Transit as a conductor and retired as a motorman after 20 years. He enjoyed baseball and basketball.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Mildred Eakins Smith and sister Bernice Green Foy. He is survived by his daughter Jamela Smith Palmer and Tyesha Greene, whom he raised as a daughter; siblings Bertha Smith of Bronx, NY, Edna Green of Brooklyn, NY, and Andrew Green of Chesapeake, VA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Rashawn, Malachi, and Jabari Palmer, and Tiyannah Blanks and a host of relatives and friends.
