From her earliest days, Karen's zest for life was evident in her love for learning, the joy of song, her admiration for Michael Jackson, and an unwavering affection for all things purple. Her educational journey took her through the schools of Weirton, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C., culminating in her graduation from McKinley Technology High School in 1979. Among her most cherished moments was the day she walked across the stage at the University of Maryland University College in College Park, Maryland to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2000, a moment made even more precious with her beloved mother by her side. Driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge, Karen furthered her academic pursuits, earning her Masters of Business Administration from the University of Maryland University College in 2010.
An unwavering faith in the Lord Jesus Christ guided Karen throughout her life's journey, fostering deep connections within her church family at Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, where her spirit of nurturing and devotion left an indelible mark.
Karen's professional tenure with the United States Government spanned years of dedication and service, culminating in her retirement from the U.S. Department of Energy in 2017. Even in her consulting roles with various companies thereafter, Karen remained a beacon of kindness, renowned among colleagues for her caring demeanor, unshakeable patience, and impeccable organization, all underscored by her ever-present smile that brought warmth and joy to those around her.
Left to cherish her memory is her dear brother Peyton Johnson (Antoinette), along with nieces Jessica Johnson-Tarpeh (James) and Rachael, great-niece Layla, and great-nephews Francisco, Peyton, and James Davis. Karen also held dear her godson Larry Hale (Helen) and embraced her bonus children Dexter Hill, Jr. (Tanyetta), Daniel Hill (Maggie Bromley), Duane Hill Sr. (Deondra), Deborah Garrett (Calvin), Deirdra Hill, and Markita Gardner (Nicholas).
