Lester E. Riordan, Jr. passed away at his home in Laurel, Maryland in the early morning of October 29, 2016. He was 81 years old.
Les was born in New York City on November 22, 1934 to Lester and Anna Riordan. He grew up in Ardsley and Irvington, New York. In 1952, Les joined the United States Marine Corps. Les was assigned to 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. Les received two campaign stars in the defense of the Korean Demilitarized Zone between 1953 and 1955. He served with distinction in Korea, was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged in 1955.
Les married Kathryn Kennedy in 1958. Les and Kathy settled in College Park, Maryland where Les enrolled at the University of Maryland. He graduated with a degree in accounting in 1961.
Les worked for the federal government for over 25 years, first as a revenue agent with the Internal Revenue Service and later as an auditor for the Department of the Navy and Department of Defense. His work at DOD included a 5-year assignment to Frankfurt, Germany where he supervised a variety of Army and NATO audits all across Europe. Les retired as an Audit Director of the Army Audit Agency in 1989. In addition to his government service, Les owned or partnered in a number of small businesses during his career including an accounting practice, a restaurant, a rug store and a tax preparation business. He also earned a real estate license and was selected to participate in the quality control program of Trans World Airlines.
Retirement did not last long for Les. Les became an investment advisor for Edward Jones. He established his office in Bowie, Maryland and he took great pride in building this business one client at a time. He retired again in 2005. He and Kathy traveled extensively and split their time between Vero Beach, Florida and Laurel, Maryland.
Les had an outstanding record of community service and leadership. He was a youth coach, active in his church, and Knights of Columbus member.
He is survived by his loving wife Kathy and his children: his sons, Les and his wife Stacey and Greg and his partner Adrienne Bowers; his daughters, Anne Janac and her husband Michael; Beth Ismail and her husband Peter; Cynthia Riordan Barbour, and Amy Glatthaar and her husband Wayne. Les was predeceased by two of his daughters, Gail and Claudia. Les is also survived by his grandchildren; Emily Barbour, Ben Janac, Jack Riordan, Quinn Riordan, and Jacie White-Glatthaar. Les is survived by two sisters, Carol Seiderman and Judy Fantozzi and his brother in law John Caporale and his wife Tootie. He was predeceased by his sisters Janet Caporale and Eileen Lancelotti and his brother-in-laws Dominic Lancelotti and Jack Siederman. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by all for his love and kindness. His family will miss him dearly.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church located at 114 St. Mary’s Place, Laurel, Maryland, on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Les will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be announced later.
