FAMILY RESPECTFULLY ASKS THAT MASKS BE WORN DURING VISITATION AND PRAYER SERVICE.
This obituary was lovingly written and submitted by Lee’s family.
Lillian “Leona,” “Lee”, Ropko Hodges age 89 of Glenn Dale, Maryland passed peacefully on March 2, 2022 with her loving family at her side.
Lee was born February 24, 1933 in Springdale, Pennsylvania to Anna (Scovitch) and Joseph Ropko. The family moved to College Park, Maryland in her teens and she was a member of the first graduating class of Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland.
In true Eastern European fashion, Lee was always able to overcome life’s hardships. As a military wife, Lee raised her family all across North America, often on her own. She was able to return to the workforce when her children were grown, working in banking for many years before helping raise her granddaughters. When she was diagnosed with cancer in spring of 2021 she braved difficult treatments to be able to spend more time with her family.
Lee also had many joys in life. As an animal lover she had many pets over the years but most recently helped rehabilitate her rescue cat, Silver. She was a member of the Fireman’s Friends Bowling League for over 25 years and enjoyed taking trips to the casino with her girlfriends. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family, including sleepovers with her great-grandchildren hosting movie night or tea parties.
She was preceded in death by brothers Stephen, Thomas and W. Francis and her sisters Marie Gilbert and Helyn Medynski. She is survived by her brother Frederick and two daughters, Caren Hodges Christopher (Donald) and Sylvia Hodges Hester. She was a beloved grandmother to four granddaughters, Rebekah and Elizabeth Hester (Daniel Bastien), Rachel Christopher Berberich (Kevin), Courtney Christopher Rothwell (Joel) and five great-grandchildren, Landon, Shelby, Chase, Adelaide, and Stella.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 8th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Donaldson Funeral Home P.A., 313 Talbott Ave, Laurel, MD 20707. Prayer service will be at Donaldson Funeral Home at 11am, Wednesday, March 9th with interment immediately following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20906.
Memorial donations may be made to Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center , University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, MD, 21201, or to any charity of your choice.
