Mary C. Brandow

February 14, 1935 — January 3, 2025

Mary Elizabeth Brandow (née Cuthbertson) passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on January 3, 2025, at the age of 89.

Mary was born on February 14, 1935, to Leona Slack and George Cuthbertson in Bradford, Pennsylvania. As a child, Mary faced a serious illness, and doctors feared she would not live long. Yet, with the care and encouragement of her devoted aunts—both nurses—Mary defied the odds. Inspired by their compassion and resilience, she pursued a career in nursing.

In 1956, Mary graduated from the W.C.A. School of Nursing in Jamestown, NY, and earned her Registered Nurse (RN) certification in 1957. Nursing was not just her profession but her calling. From her early training in New York City, where she cared for patients in leper wards with unwavering kindness and courage, to her decades-long service at Bradford Hospital, the Bradford School System, and later managing bereavement programs with Visiting Nurse in Bradford, Mary’s commitment to compassionate care was steadfast. After 40 years in nursing, she retired in 1997, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and service.

Community and connection were central to Mary’s life. Whether through her dedicated service at the First Presbyterian Church of Bradford, her support of cherished causes like the Bradford Library and the Friendship Table, or the warmth of her enduring friendships, Mary touched countless lives. Her faith, compassion, and generosity made every interaction meaningful, and her presence brought light to those around her.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Brandow (1984), her sisters Nancy Maholic and Karen Iyengar, and many dear in-laws and friends.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Susan Brandow and Jennifer Martinez; her cherished grandchildren, Jessica Brackett, Samantha Martinez, Trishia Martinez, Steven Brackett, and James Martinez Jr.; her sister, Barbara Cunningham; her brother-in-law, Jagannathan Iyengar; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

In keeping with Mary’s wishes, there will be no visitation or memorial service. However, in her honor, please take a moment to sing the hymn "I Come to the Garden Alone," (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhIGIfsLxVk ) read the poem "God of the Open Air," (https://allpoetry.com/God-of-the-Open-Air) and reflect on the verse Micah 6:8. (https://www.bible.com/bible/111/MIC.6.8.NIV) Then, share a scoop of ice cream with good friends—she would love that.

Memorial donations may be made to the Bradford Area Public Library https://bradfordlibrary.org/how-to-help/donate/memorial-in-honor-of.html
