Mary Therese (Skelly) Rohr

December 8, 1925 — April 24, 2022

Laurel, Maryland

Mary Therese (Skelly) Rohr, of Laurel Maryland, passed peacefully to her eternal home on Sunday, April 24, 2022 at Hillhaven Assisted Living & Rehabilitation Center in Adelphi, MD. She was 96 years old.

Born on December 8, 1925 in Bethlehem, PA, Mary was the second born of four children of the late John B. Skelly Sr. and Grace A. Skelly. Mary, also known as “Sis” to her family, shared a close relationship with her only sister for over 95 years.  After completing high school, Mary left home at 17 to begin nursing training at Providence Hospital School of Nursing at Second and D St. SE Washington, DC, where she earned her RN Degree. She worked at both the first Providence Hospital, where she trained, and then later at the second Providence Hospital which opened in 1956 at 1150 Varnum Street, NE Washington DC. Mary made many life-long friends in nursing school.  Her best friend, Stella M. (Sug) Becker shared her same birthday. Their friendship lasted 75 years. Mary loved the Sisters of St. Joseph of Chestnut Hill who taught her in grade school and high school.  She also became very attached to the Sisters of Charity who trained her and whom she worked with at both Providence Hospitals.

Mary married Charles S. (Buddy) Rohr in 1951. They resided in Takoma Park, MD for many years.  She was a devoted wife and mother.  She volunteered in the health room and the cafeteria of Our Lady of Sorrows School, when their daughter and son attended that school. In addition to nursing, she worked for GEICO Insurance Company in Chevy Chase, MD

Mary was an avid reader. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, and knitting. She was known for creating beautiful afghans and baby sweater sets that she gave as gifts.  She loved her faith, family, her Irish heritage, and Notre Dame football.  She had many in person and phone conversations about baseball and football with her son, grandsons, and sport-minded friends. She worked on St. Mary’s Christmas Bazaar before she joined the parish and was a member of the Ladies of Charity for several years.

Mary is survived by her two children, Lorraine Rohr Brunn, Patrick W. Rohr (Sue), two grandsons Michael A. Brunn (Samantha), Matthew S. Brunn (Marguerite), one granddaughter Shannon G. Rohr, four great grandchildren, two nephews, a sister-in-law, and many friends.
