Melvin "Bud" Roy Patterson, Jr.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Melvin “Bud” Roy Patterson, Jr. on December 14, 2024 at the age of 76.  Bud was born July 5, 1948 in Washington D.C., to Melvin and Mary (Donatiello) Patterson. Bud worked at the Washington Post for 32 years.

Many people know him as “Coach Bud” having coached Little League baseball and basketball for many years of his sons’ childhood. He was named Howard County’s first “Unsung Hero” in 1987 as part of the Maryland You are Beautiful Program. Bud was honored for his remarkable role as a coach, teaching youth about sportsmanship and to never give up on themselves in sports or in life.  Bud was the embodiment of hard work, character, and perseverance. His devotion to his family, his neighborhood, and his community were the cornerstones of his life.

Bud is survived by Cheryl Patterson, his loving wife of 53 years; son Chad Patterson; son David Patterson; daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and Robert Miller; grandchildren CJ, Cecilia, Chase, Ava, and Quinn; and many other devoted relatives and friends.

Bud was preceded in joining the Lord by his brother Albert Rocco Patterson; sister and brother-in-law Marie and Ronald King; and nephew Thomas Marcellino, Jr.

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 19, 2024, 5pm-8pm at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. in Laurel (313 Talbott Ave, Laurel, MD 20707).

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 20, 2024, 11am at Donaldson Funeral Home, P.A. in Laurel (313 Talbott Ave, Laurel, MD 20707). Burial will follow immediately (approx. 1pm) at Fort Lincoln Cemetery (3401 Bladensburg Rd, Brentwood, MD 20722). Relatives and friends are welcome at additional gathering (location to be determined).

Some may prefer in lieu of flowers a memorial donation to a cause that was important to Bud: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (online or via mail to 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105)
