Michael F. Crotty

September 1, 1947 — November 3, 2018

Michael F. Crotty, a retired lawyer and longtime Maryland resident, passed away peacefully surrounded by his children on November 3rd. He was 71.

Mr. Crotty was born in Baltimore to the late Francis and Lois (née Engels) Crotty. Part of the inaugural graduating class at Archbishop Curley High School, Mr. Crotty paid his own way through undergraduate studies at Loyola University Chicago and later Northwestern Law while supporting a wife and young family. From 1972-1976 he proudly served as a JAG officer in the U.S. Navy before returning home to Maryland to a successful career as an attorney for the American Bankers Association.

Michael enjoyed hiking, canoeing, and reading, especially his beloved Washington Post. Michael hiked most trails in the state of Maryland, including the entirety of the C&O Canal. He was infamous for his “Nixon pose” upon correctly answering Final Jeopardy, and was the family resource for all questions on historical, political, financial, or gardening topics.

Michael is survived by his daughter Jeanne and husband Christoph Roth; his son Michael II; his son John and wife Josephine; grandchildren Jonathan, Charlotte, and William; brothers Timothy, Patrick, and Francis Jr; and many extended family members. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne (née Shipley, d. 2000). He was a wonderful man and his family and friends will miss him dearly.

The visitation will take place from 4-8 PM on Sunday, November 18th at Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Ave., Laurel, MD, 20707. The funeral service will be held on Monday, November 19th, at 11 AM at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, 8603 Contee Road, Laurel, MD 20708, where he was a parishioner for 40 years.
