Myroslav Hnatyshyn

Myroslav Hnatyshyn, 92, of Laurel, Maryland passed peacefully into Eternal life with his loving family beside him on November 27, 2014. Visitation will be on Thursday, December 4 at 4 p.m. to be followed by a Parastas at 5 p.m. at Donaldson Funeral Home, 313 Talbott Avenue, Laurel, Maryland. The Pohoron (funeral) will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 5 at Holy Trinity Particular Ukrainian Catholic Church, 16631 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland; a Tryzna will be held at 1 p.m. in the parish hall. Internment at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 6 at St. Andrews Ukrainian Cemetery, 240 Main Street, South Bound Brook, New Jersey 08880.

Myroslav was born to Maria and Ivan on July 13, 1922, in Lysa, Ukraine. He was taken from Lysa after 1941 by the occupying German Army and forced into slave labor in Germany. After the war, he immigrated from Germany to the United States where in New York City he met his wife, Janina. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1954 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. From 1966 to his passing, he made his home in Laurel, Maryland where he and Janina, married for 55 years, raised six children in the full traditions of the Ukrainian homeland from which they were driven away by the war. Myroslav was very active in the musical community singing with the Columbia Choral Society, the Laurel Oratorio Society, the Ukrainian National Choir of Baltimore and Washington, as well as cantoring at St. Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Baltimore, Maryland, and Holy Trinity Particular Ukrainian Catholic Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. Myroslav arranged music for the bandura and actively involved his children in musical performance, both vocal and instrumental, throughout the years. Myroslav was an honest and hardworking man, who loved gardening, photography and carpentry. Myroslav is survived by his wife, Janina (nee Wojtowicz) of Laurel, Maryland; his sons, Roman Hnatyshyn of Baltimore, Zenon Hnatyshyn of Laurel, Taras Hnatyshyn of Laurel; his daughters, Marta Hnatyshyn of Laurel, Irma Lyszyk and her husband, Andriy, of Laurel; Mira Hudson and her husband, Neff, of San Antonio, and two granddaughters, Nina Hudson and Lila Hudson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Myroslav's name to the Holy Trinity Particular Ukrainian Catholic Church, 16631 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, Maryland 20905.
